Tooth-Coloured Composite Resin Restorations

White or tooth-coloured fillings made of aesthetic composite resin can be bonded to your teeth for a stronger, more natural-looking result. Composite fillings are virtually undetectable and require only a single appointment to apply. There are four main types of filling materials used on an ongoing basis. Tooth coloured or white bondable filings.

Amalgam filllings better known in laymen terms as silver fillings which can also be bonded. Gold or porcelain fillings round out our armementarium and for the highest quality require 2 visits instead of one as there is a laboratory component associated with gold and porcelain fillings requiring an impression to be sent to the laboratory for the filling to be fabricated. Bondable resin or silver fillings are the most economical and can cost from $120 to $320 depending on how much tooth is being restored versus triple or quadruple the cost for gold or porcelain fillings. 98% of the fillings Dr. Kirshens' place in their practice are tooth coloured composite resins.

Silver amalgam still has a use in deep cavities below the gum line far back in the mouth. We live in a vain society and most people request white fillings even if silver or gold would be a better choice or last longer. The alternative to avoid silver fillings or place a white filing where we feel it will not last for a long time is to crown the tooth with a porcelain crown or onlay so best to protect it. Dr. Kirshen will best advise you on what will be the strongest and longest lasting restoration for your circumstances. We pride ourselves on work that has lasted for decades.

Bleaching or Teeth Whitening

Many of us feel that our smiles are most striking when our teeth look especially white and healthy, but unfortunately, soft drinks, coffee, red wine, tea, and tobacco can cause yelllowing and staining. To help you restore your smile to the level of whiteness you desire and to give you an added boost of confidence Dr. Kirshen will gladly advise on the best option available for you. Custom whitening kits used at home and a Brite Smile in- office whitening session are our best tools. Depending on the level of original discouration which you start with, and the desired result you wish to achieve, Dr. Kirshen will customize your treatment.

The most up to date scientific literature tells us that to obtain the whitest longest lasting colour for any individual, that it is important to first bleach slowly at home for a prescribed number of days and then to have a 1 1/2 hour in-office Brite Smile session. By combining the two different methods Dr. Kirshen stops the colour from rebounding back towards your original colour. Custom trays will be fabricated from dental moulds taken at our office. We will then choose the correct percentage of Carbamide Peroxide (10%, 16%, 25%) and the length of time per day and the number of days for you to bleach at home.

After 7 to 14 days you would then have an in-office session where the teeth are isolated and the gums and lips are thoroughly protected so we can now use a specific concentration of Hydrogen Peroxide to complete the whitening process. Dr. Kirshen recommends keeping the trays handy so after your regular check-up appointments you can bleach at home for 1 or 2 times and keep the whiter colour stable and bright. Yearly upkeep is usually achieved for only $15.00. Please contact us today to find out more about these options and which one is best for you.

Veneers are an aesthetic procedure that can allow for minimum tooth reduction to create a beautiful smile when used in the proper situations. All too often they are prescribed for the wrong reasons. Many patients can be better served by teeth whitening and Orthodontic procedures like Invisalign. Veneers should be used judiciously.

Dr. Kirshen believes in conservative therapy modalities and holds that the integrity of the natural tooth as sarcosanct. Once we drill into a tooth we may be forcing the individual to undergo replacement procedures as the years pass. For someone in their twenties this may mean two or three changes over a lifetime. Learn all the options that are available. Utilizing a porcelain venner does allow Dr. Kirshen to preserve tooth structure as the amount of tooth preparation is minimal compared to preparing a crown. The shape and colour of the teeth can be easily altered to transform the smile. Porcelain veneers are the most aesthetic as the lab produced and glazed material are highly reflective and non porous, so they do not stain or change or colour over time. It requires two appointments to achieve this level of cosmetic precision.

Resin veneers are done in one sitting and are an excellent alternative when finances play a role in the decision making process, as they are half the cost of porcelain veneers. The difference is that the colour slowly changes over time and does not have the same glossiness. Please see our photo library to compare. I am sure you will agree that both are acceptable but every case is assessed on its own merit. Dr. Kirshen will always give you options and help you weigh the pros and cons, risks and benefits, so you can make an informed decision.
